Buffalo Plaid Daze

Buffalo plaid is one of those patterns that makes its' way into our lives every winter almost as if to announce that, pretty soon, you will be bitching about frozen lips and toes. As much as most of us dread this time of season, I have to admit, my love for the checkerboard-like grid makes the extreme drop in temps just about tolerable.

You can find buffalo plaid blanketing just about everything around the holiday season. From shirts to sweaters to socks to, well, blankets - you can't avoid this holiday staple pattern... and really, who would complain about it?! Trust me, this won't be the last time you see me [and just about everyone else] in this pattern until the temperatures begin to rise again. Happy start to the holidaze!

There are certain things that keep me sane as the snow begins to cover New York City every winter and traveling is at the very top of that list! This week's Look of the Week is inspired by those necessary extras I need every time I travel.

As much as I like to travel light while on my trekks out of the city, things like a sturdy suitcase, a notebook with plenty of blank pages, my favorite pillow from Faribault Woolen Mills, and a mending kit for those annoying lost buttons on the one button-down shirt I remembered to pack are always in tow. Make sure you stay tuned for a big announcement on my upcoming travels. It's going to be beachin!

It's always so hard to dress in NYC this time of year. One day it's pouring down rain and freezing, the next it's super humid and muggy... I am just never really prepared for the day ahead until I scroll through multiple weather apps on my phone. As unpredictable as the weather can be these days, the one thing I can predict is the snow is definitely on its' way. So for now, I'm going to enjoy some of my favorite fall staples and it all starts with the perfect pair of loafers.

There's nothing more fall than a pair of loafers, sans socks. Either dressed up with a tailored suit or dressed down with denim and tee, a good pair of loafers will instantly upgrade your style from the floor up! Made of Horween American bison leather and sheepskin lined, these Heath Loafers from Trask are my go-tos this season. Homebody Bound

With the week just about half way over, I'm already planning the weekend ahead. This weekend, I'll be heading back to Phoenix, Arizona to escape the drop in temperatures that are on their way to hit New York... except this time, I think the cold will be here for good! Damn.

I always love traveling no matter where the destination is. Something about leaving the busy city for an instant sense of decompression, relaxation, and, most importantly, some hotel seclusion. As much as I love NYC, the feeling that you are constantly surrounded by thousands of people can be a bit much so I take every chance I can get to have some solitude. There's no better feeling than being a homebody for a few days!

If you have any suggestions on places I should see this weekend while in Phoenix, do not hesitate to reach out and let me know!

LOTW: Topcoat Takeover

There's really nothing more classic than a topcoat during fall/winter. It can easily upgrade your daily style no matter how you're dressed below the tailored outer-piece and makes your look just that much more interesting. It makes people instantly curious about what you might be hiding under your topcoat... and this Look of the Week shows just how I pull it off daily!

I'm not going to lie, I am completely outerwear obsessed [boarder-line hoarder] and when browsing through my closet you would see just about half of it filled with jackets, flannels, and over-shirts during the colder months of year. I can never have too many! Currently though, I am hooked on overcoats... there's just something about a good tailored overcoat that makes me feel sophisticated and mature but in the best ways possible.

As you can see above, it's all about the topcoat when I style it into my looks. No matter if I'm wearing a modern, more expensive all-black look or going out to grab a coffee in my sweats and sneakers, or heading to the airport for a quick trip to escape the cold... it's all about the topcoat and will be the first thing anyone will notice! Which of these looks is your favorite? Comment below and let me know.

Cue the Lights

Lately I’ve really become wrist-wear obsessed… be it a bracelet or a watch [no matter the cost] I seem to always need to finish my daily looks with a wrist piece. Recently though, I’ve focused my time [and money!] on finding some great watches that will not only look beautiful and catch the attention of passers by but will also be durable while on the go, without worry.

As I prepare for my winter travels, I’ve been searching for a great piece that will of course be sleek and modern in hopes of upgrading some of my style, but will also be durable and is made to last. Cue the lights… I bring you the Victorinox Night Vision. This Swiss made timepiece not only has the aesthetic appeal of a super high-end watch but is also built with a multifunctional interface that I know will come in handy during my travels. As the name describes, this Night Vision prepared timepiece will have you set for the darkest of places with a blue LED backlit dial and a hidden light beam that can even send out an SOS signal [just to name 2 of the 6 lighting features] for those more adventurous travelers.

The Victorinox Night Visionisn’t all about performance though - style is not sacrificed for function! With an anti-reflective sapphire crystal face and steel “Black Ice” PVD bracelet, your daily style will definitely be on the up and up. What’s PVD [Physical Vapor Deposition] you ask?? In short, it reduces the wear on metal and was originally used in the military to keep their metal machines running strong even in the harshest conditions… so there’s no need in worrying if the Victorinox Night Vision’s beauty will last! If these words didn't do it justice, then just watch below to experience it for yourself!

Flannel Escape

Last weekend I had the pleasure of escaping NYC's bitter cold to warm and sunny Phoenix, Arizona for a quick trip and some much needed [sun] rays. I love taking any chance I can get to leave New York to experience new cities, make new friends, and act like Monday isn't quickly creeping on the horizon.

As much as I knew the weather would be warm, I just couldn't stop myself from packing some of my favorite flannels from Thomas Mason for J. Crew. This super soft fabric from one of Europe's oldest mills breaks after every wash and gets all that much more comfortable to wear... so much that you would find any reason to wear it too. No matter what the temperature is!

American Authors x AXE Hair

Recently, Brooklyn-based band American Authors returned to their home state of New York to take over Time Square and play at the Best Buy Theater as they continue their Honda Civic Tour across the US. I luckily had the chance to hang out with members from the band pre-show to talk grooming, style, and their latest collaboration - getting groomed by AXE Hair for their video, "Luck," and for the nights show here in NYC... and really, what better way to wear-test the grooming collection than on a group of real rockstars doing what they do best!?

Trend Styled: You guys just partnered with AXE Hair for your latest video, "Luck," and for tonight's show... what did you guys think?

American Authors: "It's been great! The creative control they let us have on the video shoot with our personal styles and our style as a band has been awesome. They've been there to help amplify it all... let us do our thing, let us work with the product too."

TS: How'd it hold?!

AA: "Grrrreat!... The whole time!! It was good for this video too... it was great to have them there to help us portray different characters with very different hairstyles."
TS: You guys all have your own style but over the years has it honed into one consesus of what you all would be going for on stage and in your videos?

AA: "We have our own personal styles but we help influence each other to try new things and maybe go out of our comfort zone and try new things stylistically fashion wise. We do have one rule on stage though... muted colors! [But you can wear hot pink underwear!]"

TS: You guys are touring through the rest of this year, what's in store for 2015?

AA: "Finishing up the Honda Civic Tour now... then we will go to Europe to tour then come back to the states for radio shows but come the new year we're getting back into the studio and start recording some new tunes... album number two!"

*Special thanks to AXE and Edelman for a great night!*

Is it seriously already Thanksgiving?! I feel like only yesterday I was gearing up for summer's sunny days and now, I'm full on holiday mode and all that comes with it... including some rainy days.

As much as I love Thanksgiving, it's always that weird part of year where you have to be prepared for just about anything weather-wise. Luckily, today I was fully prepped thanks to my friends at French Connection who sent over the perfect rainy day outerwear piece - the Supersoft Moleskin Jacket. With a detachable inner lining for an extra layer of warmth and a weather necessary hood, I've been and will be sporting this jacket all season long. Now excuse me while I stuff my face all weekend long... Happy Turkey Day friends!!

City Explorer

It's hard to not fall in love with New York City just about every day. There's always something that catches your eye that makes you either appreciate how great this city is or, at the very least, proud of making it through the first few months [some cases years] of transition that is always a struggle to get through. Luckily, I've made it just about five years in NYC so am in full swing of appreciating every nook and patch of this island... especially while strolling Central Park this time of year.

Speaking of transitions, this Palladium x Alpha Industries MA-1 City Explorer Flight Jacketcollaboration is the perfect weather transitional piece for my Central Park strolls. Currently obsessed with flight jackets, I was pumped when I first heard of this collaboration from the two military rooted brands. Color-blocked with sage, black, maroon, navy, and orange, it's colors mimic the changing leaves you'll discover while strolling in NYC, and is fitting of the City Explorer name it was given. Make sure you also check out the boot collabos - the Pampa Hi Zip Ma-1 boots and the Baggy Zip Ma-1 boots - from the collection too!

LOTW: Winter Whites

Never one to follow any style rules - especially the 'no whites after Labor Day' rule - my winters always call for hues of white! I love dressing for the season in the crisp, clean color almost as if to mimic the falling snow and cloudy skies. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em!

This week's Look of the Week is winter inspired and made up of some of my favorite latest discoveries from East Dane. This DSquared2 sweater is hands down my favorite find this week. Like dressing for my day every day, I built my entire look around this great find and let the rest fall in place. With just about everything from clothing to gifting items, East Dane is my one stop shop for all things style... and makes dressing for the day that much easier!

What do you think?... Do you wear white post-Labor Day and would you wear this look? Comment below or follow my social networks and tell me!!

Modern Classics

I'm really loving my neighborhood these days. Living in New York City is great and all but it is really all about balance for me being a former Texan! I love being just on the cusp of the action but not directly in the middle of it like I did when I first moved to this city. It may just be that I'm older [err, wiser!] but living in the Upper West Side, just half a block from Central Park, is my favorite nook of the city lately.

The old brownstones, [sometimes] quiet tree lined streets, and my favorite bodega where they know my order as soon as I walk in the door are just a few of the reason why I love walking these streets of the UWS. As you can see from the first picture above, even the bluebird - the New York State bird - photo-bombing me in the background loves my hood... or maybe my new blue Simon Miller for Volley Australia kicks caught his eye!

I first spotted these kicks over the summer when the collaboration launched so when Volley Australia reached out to send me over a pair from the collection, I jumped at getting my hands on them. I've loved the Volley Australia brand for a while now - the classic appeal with a modern twist of every style always has me convinced it's time for a new pair!

This Simon Miller for Volley Australia collection mixed Japanese fabrics and indigo dyes - as Simon Miller is known for - to create a whole new mood to the brands iconic style. The collaboration collection may be over for now but trust me, there are tons of new styles to choose from! Head on over to the Volley Australia website and discover some for yourself... and really, you can not beat the price so buy multiples and start a collection of your own!

Lumbersexual

Every once in a while I get the funniest emails and comments about recent posts... everything from asking where to buy a certain piece I'm wearing to criticizing the "color combo agenda" I'm pushing. Seriously. I can't make this stuff up! I take it all with a grain of salt but really do appreciate every hearing from readers good or bad... but I especially love the ones like this weeks informing me of my very "Lumbersexual" appeal lately!

For those of you who have not heard of the term Lumbersexual - Urban Dictionary [lol] defines it as, "a Metro-sexual who has the need to hold on to some outdoor based ruggedness..." I obviously took the comment to heart - and as a compliment of course! - and decided to go full on with the latest trend. Trust me, if Lumbersexual hasn't hit your city or country yet, it will soon be taking over this winter. Get into it!

Meet the newest addition to the family... Pete! Ha, only kidding but this beast - which belongs to a neighbor of mine - is pretty damn cute huh?! I'm in full on casual mode in one of my favorite pieces from the Todd Snyder x Championcollaboration to start off my busy week of last minute Christmas shopping and errands as I prepare to make some big moves this weekend!

Starting Sunday, I'll be on a five week adventure traveling to the other side of the world hoping to avoid the frigid temps in NYC for the holidays! I don't want to give away too much just yet, but all I'll say is I can not wait to be beachside soaking up some sun. Make sure you follow me on Instagram - @TrendStyled - to join in on some of the sunny days ahead!

Gift Wrapped

I don't know what it is about this time of year that really gets me in the mood for plaids. Maybe it's the constant sites of gift wrapping paper and decorations all around that somehow tempts me into wrapping myself in the holiday's best plaids. My closet is quickly being taken over, as it does every year, with the tartan and checked goodness - all it's missing is a big bow!

I'm loving the collection of Thomas Mason Flannel Plaids from J. Crew this year... I think I've invested in just about every one they carry! Not one to wear a lot of bright colors, I was surprised by how obsessed I was when I spotted this one. There's just something about Christmas that persuades me to break all my inner rules of avoiding punches of color - like red - so this flannel was the perfect addition to my holiday shirt collection. There really is no reason to ever invest in an "ugly Christmas sweater" look when you can join in on the holiday fun while looking good. 'Tis the season!

Not one to dumb down style for any reason, I make sure I'm prepped for any run-in... you just never know who you might see while your out. Be it traveling to my local bodega for coffee or traveling abroad like I am now, I'm always ready for anything!

It really doesn't take much to get dressed for your travels. I understand when people head to the airport they want to be comfortable for the flight but there is no reason you have to lose comfort for style these days. Where jeans with some stretch in them and you won't feel so confined in your sardine can sized seat as you board your flight. Also, a good outerwear piece goes a long way... remember, you can store it once you board. This leather motocross jacket from Express is the latest addition to my outerwear and travel pieces. I wear it for an instant style boost and was super affordable! Finally, your luggage... almost the most important piece of your travel look. I recently got this monogrammed carry-on duffle sent to me from my friends at Kenneth Cole. It's the perfect size for a weekend trip or to carry-on some necessities for the longer trips abroad. I'll be using him for many trips to come! Safe travels!

Plaid Binge

As you can probably tell if you follow me on Instagram, I'm currently out of the US traveling the beaches of New Zealand... and since my current time is a day ahead than New York City, I'm actually speaking to you from the future too! Spooky huh!? This one will be short and sweet...

Last week, American Eagle Outfitters challenged me to style one of their latest plaids... being on a plaid binge currently, it was not a problem! I went for a more low-key look and paired the plaid shirt with some of their joggers [that are currently on me now as I speak to you from the future] and a lightweight denim jacket. Super casual, comfortable, but definitely in style... if I do say so myself.

I'm off for now but make sure you're following along for my travels... it'll be full on beach picture takeover from this point on! Happy Holidays!

Beach access steps to Totaranui Beach

Reporting to you straight from New Zealand! I could not be more excited to start the New Year off in one of the most beautiful, green countries I've ever visited. If you've followed some of my past travels in my #WheredSaulGo - named appropriately for sounding like Where's Waldo - series then you've seen some of my past trips around the United States but this trip is on a whole other level! On the schedule for this first leg of the journey - traveling by way of RV camper, thanks to Fiat, all around the South Island, discovering as we go, and planning on a day by day basis... no schedule, just some fun in the sun!

Our first stop on this three week journey around the South Island of New Zealand - Totaranui Beach! Located on the North coast of the Southern Island of New Zealand, this remote beach location is definitely one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever been to or seen. With room for only a few hundred campers - by choice of the government that keeps this small beach as public land and protects from being built on - you instantly feel like you are on your own private beach with some of your closest friends. It's quite a trek to get to from any major city but the scenic drive through the mountains and canyons is worth the hours it takes to get there. If you've ever seen the movie The Beach - this is exactly that! Crystal clear waters, golden sandy beach, and surrounded by mountains and lush hiking/biking paths... it was, without a doubt, the best way to start the first leg of our trip!

This is just the beginning so make sure you stay tuned for so much more! I'll be posting as often as possible here but if you want to follow day by day, follow me on Instagram - @TrendStyled or with the hashtag #WheredSaulGo!
