MADE Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week has come and gone, surprisingly without much more than one slip in the ice but, without a doubt, a few more notches in my fashion week experiences belt. It's so crazy to think that not more than 4 years ago, I was sitting in Texas in a classroom hoping to one day figure out something to do with my life... cut to this week and I'm sitting along side [mostly a few rows behind] some of the most influential people in the fashion world. Funny what a new day brings... especially while living in New York City.

One of my favorite moments - well days - of this week was experiencing MADE Fashion Week at Milk Studios on Sunday as part of an all access group of their Blogger Army. This day focused on menswear and the biggest designers who are shaping men's style and trends today. One of which, and my personal favorite, Public School had a double-first when debuting it's fall/winter 2014 line this season - a huge leap into women's design and also the first time producing a runway show. This was without a doubt one of the most anticipated shows which was only made clearer by the attendees including fashion powerhouses Anna Wintour, Editor-in-Chief of American Vogue, and Jenna Lyons, Creative Director of J. Crew just to name two.

The show of course did not disappoint. A collaboration of masculinity meets femininity created a line of androgynous pieces focusing on what they are known for most, outerwear. Keeping on tone, the designing duo threw into the mix, a line of unexpected but impeccably tailored suiting pieces for both men and women.  Enjoy some of the images of some of my favorite pieces caught by Anthony Cabaero, Joe Marquez, and Chris Swainston. For more behind the scenes and across the runway images, go follow me on Instagram: @trendstyled.

Big thank you to MADE Fashion Week for including me in a group of some of the most prominent online influencers from around the country... how is this my life!?

West Coast Vibes

As much as I have loved the weather in NYC the past couple weeks [enter white girl eye roll here], it's that time of year again... PROJECT Las Vegas! As many of you saw last month, I attended PROJECT NYC as part of Blogger PROJECT where I covered the three days of shows and events. Well this time around, we're moving out West to Las Vegas for some sun, fun, and well, booze. Let's just be honest here. In all seriousness though, I can't be more excited to escape the winter vortex that is the East Coast and join my fellow bloggers to bring another week of all things menswear including apparel, footwear, and grooming.

In honor of moving out West, one of my favorite discoveries from the NYC round of PROJECT was Sol Angeles - a California based brand that epitomizes the laid back, easy lifestyle that is the West Coast. While it was pretty much a blizzard outside, the booth - and the team behind the brand - caught my eye which quickly  had me dreaming of sunny, summer days. I was instantly hooked to these indigo sweats and knew I had to style our model for the day, David, in them. Of course a summer look isn't complete without a cool ride. If you were at PROJECT NYC then I'm sure you caught me obnoxiously cruising around the floors from booth to booth on this guy - Hugo by Mosi Bicycles. Easily the perfect bike that I hope to be riding around NYC this spring and summer! Make sure you follow me on Instagram/Twitter all week for more finds and some insanely long nights party hopping in Las Vegas:

Sunday Shave

As I dive deeper into the men's grooming world, I am finding that more and more guys are willing and eager to try new and old products in order to keep from losing their good looks. Women are no longer the only ones browsing the cosmetic isles hoping to discover the next big product that will keep them preserved from the outside in. While men are quickly becoming more comfortable experimenting with new products, for us, there just isn't anything like traditional techniques that we know will work every time.

I love a good shave and if you haven't gone to a proper barber for one before, you are missing out! If you aren't up for the risk of having some old guy with a shaky hand come at you with a straight razor then you must try the Van der Hagen Shave Set. This super affordable set supplies everything you need for a clean shave that has more benefits than just lathering up and slapping on the shaving cream. Not only are you exfoliating your skin while you brush on the lather, but you are also conditioning and raising the hairs for that super close, smooth as a baby's butt shave. This has been a part of my Sunday routine for the past month and I'm finding that I'm having to shave less and less every week... not to mention those extra glances I get on Monday mornings! Happy grooming fellas.

PROJECT LV: Day One

I've finally arrived in Las Vegas for PROJECT LV and could not be more excited. Not only is it super sunny and warm, but the show is on a completely other level. The floor of the showroom is massive so I spent most of the day finding my way through the rows of endless booths of some great apparel, footwear, and men's grooming. Really looking forward to discovering more brands over the next few days and of course sharing it all with you. Favorite brands that I've met with so far including Fjallraven, Gents Co., Will Leather Goods, and DSquared2 [all pictured here] show just how diverse PROJECT LV is. Comment below or message me if there's anyone you want to see more of from my PROJECT NYC coverage!

Todd Snyder F|W14

PROJECT LV may have come to an end, but I am still obsessing over the great finds and rediscoveries I had the opportunity to browse through. As much as I have been an avid fan of Todd Snyder, there's just nothing like seeing and touching new pieces in person. The brand is no stranger to TRENDSTYLED and I am sure you have all seen and read plenty from me about T. Snyder so I knew I had to style a couple of looks from the new fall/winter 2014 line.

Elevated sweat pants are definitely a growing trend but what I love most about these is that they look so similar to a great pair of tailored wool pants which can effortlessly be paired with just about anything. I can't wait to get into a pair myself and add them to my growing collection of Todd Snyder pieces.

Big thank you to Wilhelmina L.A. model Aaron Thornton and of course David and Hilliary of Todd Snyder for letting me pull some of my favorite pieces from the collection.

A Spring Preview

If you were around NYC this weekend you, along with me, got an exciting glimpse of what spring will bring. The sun finally came out and the temps peaked at fifty degrees! As cold as that might be to some of my West Coast readers, for us New Yorkers, it was just what we needed to get us through this last blast of winter we are experiencing now. Spring can not come soon enough!

The only thing more exciting than the warmer temperatures that spring brings is delayering my now almost Michelin Man wardrobe! For me, spring is all about losing the big coats and getting into some more lightweight outerwear. Definitely on trend and obviously super cool, this Coach Leather Baseball Jacket is a must in your spring investments. Made up of all leather, this upgraded take on a classic baseball jacket can easily be styled for any guy trekking around town.

This weekend I enjoyed the balmy weather sporting this jacket as I trekked the city from a coffee date at my favorite spot - Jack's Stir Brew Coffee - to a much needed boozy brunch to watching the sunset over the Hudson River in the West Village with a special someone. Seriously could not have asked for a better welcome back after a long week in Las Vegas. Now bring on spring... please!

White Collar Job

As New Yorkers begin to see the sun-light at the end of the tunnel we can't help but take full advantage and dive over the deep end into our spring wardrobes... if even for only a day.

The best part of a new season is the excitement of trying out new and classic trends that we've been so eager to attempt. Throwing on a full suit isn't really my day to day style but a great tailored shirt takes me a long way. Upgrade your classics with a white-collar like this J. Crew Ludlow shirt that will definitely be in my arsenal. Easily transitioning my wardrobe from office to weekend-wear is key, but I never like to lose style for comfort.

My latest discovery that has solved the above - Hydrogen-1. "Remove all unnecessary details and what is left is clean, effortless style, right for the times and never overdone," says Hero Nakatani - creator of these Italian made kicks. As sneaker obsessed as I am, I have never come across shoes with such upgraded style while keeping to a classic look needed for those of us trekking into the office on Monday mornings... all while never losing comfort. Stay tuned over the next few weeks for a sneak peak into of more to come from Hydrogen-1.

A Night in Salvatore Ferragamo

If you're following along on Instagram [@trendstyled] then you saw this weeks big event with Salvatore Ferragamo x Details Magazine here in NYC hosted by number one male model in the world, Sean O'Pry. It was definitely a night that I will not be forgetting for a very long time. Not only was I invited, but I - along with a couple other blogger buddies - was dressed in head to toe Ferragamo from the spring 2014 collection.

I'm all about athletic-wear mixed with tailored jackets and full on suits so when I saw this seasons show by Massimiliano Giornetti, Creative Director of Salvatore Ferragamo, I was all over it. I love the casual feeling of an elevated, athletic sweatshirts layered under a great blazer and paired with some bad ass kicks - these basket weaved Ferragamo shoes will be glued to my feet as long as possible - so getting dressed for this weeks event was a breeze. What do you guys think of the look? Check out the rest of the collection here and let me know what you think!

It has been one hell of a winter this year that is still never ending. With the serious dips in temps once again last week, I just could not stay in the city for one more day. At the spur of a moment, we decided to pack up and move South for the winter - well at least for a few days - to get a good [over]dose of Vitamin D, eat a ton of food, and get a few tennis lessons from Venus Williams at the Sony Open

Big thank you to SLS Hotel South Beach for a great stay and of course for some much needed pool-side tanning, eating, and drinking! If you guys head out to South Beach, this is the place to stay. Check in, head to Hyde Beach [their beach club with great tunes, drinks, and lounging], and do not move for days!

Make sure to stay tuned while I record more of my traveling adventures in some of my favorite cities across the U.S. and abroad - next stops on the books: Las Vegas, Nevada and Phoenix, Arizona. If you're in these cities let me know the cool local spots to hit up... especially in Phoenix - it'll be our first time!

There's just nothing like the feeling of finally getting to begin your spring cleaning and pack away all of those heavy coats and sweaters you were so excited about before realizing you would be wearing them for much longer than anticipated! I spent most of last weekend vaccum sealing all my winter goods and turning my closet into a warm weather clothing only zone which has already lifted my winter blues. My current style mood: color-blocking + baseball caps! Now if I could just get my butt back to the beach.

TRENDSTYLED x American Crew

As I continue my endeavor into the men's grooming world, I am constantly looking for my way into all of your every day routines in order to educate myself [and hopefully some of you] on just how to properly complete your daily looks and maybe gain a little more confidence along with it. So, when American Crew reached out and asked TRENDSTYLED to collaborate as a Brand Ambassador, I knew I had to take full advantage of partnering with a brand that is the epitome of men's grooming and without a doubt, an American staple!

In order to jump start my collaboration with American Crew, I had the pleasure of sitting down with the brands Creative Director, Paul Wilson, to ask some important questions about the brand and of course some grooming tips that I have always been curious about:

TS: What is the biggest challenge in creating men’s grooming products?

Paul Wilson: I would say that the biggest challenge is the fact that there is so much out there and things are so specific. So I guess it’s both the fun and the challenge - thinking of what the specificities or what the relevance is of a new product, like what’s the amount of hold or shine or the pliability factor? Those are all of the fun parts in thinking about what we need to create. And being the leader in men’s grooming I feel like we sort of have that responsibility to have the most relevant new products for men.

TS: Do you think that men’s trends for the coming years change what you create?

Paul Wilson: It does for sure. This is one of the first years that we haven’t had a launch of products that support a new collection specifically. So what we have done is, we are asking this new collection (The Independent) of shapes to be styled in so many different ways we just found that we had everything we already need in the brand. We used to have six great products and now we have an arsenal. So now we really just figure out how to layer and combine products to get the specific looks and that has worked well.

TS: What is the one American crew product every guy need is his daily arsenal and how is it used?

Paul Wilson: I would say Alternator. If I had to pick one that would be the one, largely because of versatility and the fact that it never sets up. You have this constant texture and hold, sort of all built in. There are so many of the classic products from the brand like the Pomade, Fiber, the Firm Hold Gel that I think are key components that guys should have in their bathroom, but if you had to have one, I would choose Alternator because of its versatility.

With Alternator, when it’s first applied you get this cool texture and you would think that it sort of sets up and that it would become some kind of a placement product, but it doesn’t do that. Later in the day or at any point it could just literally be pushed in another direction. So you could go from something groomed and off the face, and then come back and just use your fingers to do something that’s looser and lets gravity get a hold of it a little bit. When I talk about versatility with Alternator, I really mean the ability to restyle the hair.

TS: Sleek or messy, how should a guy groom this spring?

Paul Wilson: I’m going to say both. The Independent collection and all of the technique, the looks we were trying to go for are all underlying statements about the message of men’s hair which is complete versatility so all the cuts can be styled in legitimately in three different ways.

TS: How important is the guys cut before he decides on the style?

Paul Wilson: The cut is critical. The concept of the cut is critical. When you are asking hair to do different things there’s just a lot of things that need to be considered with the quality of the cut.

TS: Does changing seasons warrant changing your do, or hair regiment?

Paul Wilson: I think it generally does. Again, when we talk about this versatility of men’s hair I think it sort of speaks to that. We release this collection in the spring basically and it kind of leads up to spring fashion and that sort of is our platform. I would say maybe it’s slightly less important that there be spring haircut and a fall haircut, but again the versatility gives you the ability to ride through all that.

TS: What gives American Crew is trademark smell?

Paul Smith: I think the fragrance is distinctly masculine. The product has been around since 1994. The first time you open American Crew product it’s so specific and it just made such a statement and it’s been a part of the brand for a very long time.  I think that as we are starting to ask guys not to wash their hair as much the fragrance helps that process because guys still need to smell good and you want your hair to feel clean and not smell dirty. I think that the fragrance helps that.

TS: How often should a guy wash his hair?

Paul Wilson: We are trying to get guys out of the predisposed idea that you hair has to be squeaky clean all the time. I think it sort of is a society thing that developed making everyone thinks that hair has to be super clean. Alternator is a great example of a product that makes the hair feel lived in. Hair just works better when it has that quality second day hair. Some guys are never going to get away from washing their hair everyday because they go to the gym, so alternator does a great job creating that. We are also encouraging guys to shampoo their every other day, just to let some of that natural oil live in their hair. We are finding that the majority of our guys, if you can get them into that regiment, like their hair better on that second day.

Stay tuned for much more to come including a sneak peak into the brands current and future grooming collections, product reviews, how-to tips, and, of course, some amazing grooming giveaways!

Hello Brooklyn!

There are few things that will convince a NYCer to make the [what only seems like] long trek out of the city and into Brooklyn but a Nets game definitely tops that small list! Even though game seven was in Toronto it was still vital for me to sport my BK Nets swag as I broed out and watched the Nets beat the Raptors, advancing them to conference semis. Any reason to have some day drinks and enjoy this beautiful spring Sunday! Any of you guys watching the playoffs? Who are you routing for?!

This week is all about pops of color. As spring finally rolls through NYC to stay, we are all getting a chance to dress down and enjoy everything we fell in love with in this city. Just a few personal faves - coffee on a stoop in the AM, patio lunches/dinners, and of course new discoveries around my neighborhood. It's the small things like discovering a quickly painted wall in bursts of colors that really helps us all stop, smile, and bribe us all to just be happy!

LOTW: Proper Traveler

When prepping for my day I remind myself of one thing before making my way out the door: "Always dress like you're going to see your worst enemy!" When it comes to traveling - there is  just no difference. I will never understand when I see people dressed as if they're going out for the morning paper - do people actually still do that?! - styled in their best sweats with matching house slippers. I just don't get it!

It doesn't take too much effort getting dressed even for the earliest of flights... especially when you have a great suit like this Richard James Prince of Wales Check suit pictured here! When a well-made suit is tailored to fit, there just isn't anything more comfortable.

Want to get into your own made-to-measure Richard James suit?! Well no need to travel all the way to Savile Row in London to have one of the best bespoke suits tailored to your body. Langham Place, a five-star hotel based on New York City's own Savile Row - 5th Avenue - has partnered with the brand to bring you a one of a kind experience. All next week [May 12th - 16th] guests will have access to a Richard James tailor in one of the immaculate Residence Suites to get a custom made suit or shirt. Packages also offered including accommodations, a 60-minute Executive Indulge Treatment in the Spa, and, of course some made-to-measure pieces by a Richard James tailor. Contact Langham Place soon - appointments book out fast!

I had the pleasure to speak with Richard James himself to get the inside scoop of just why we should all invest in our own bespoke suit this summer. Here's exactly what the super charismatic man had to say:

TS: What are the biggest trends you are seeing in men’s suiting today?
Richard James: Less structure and lighter fabrics. Appearance is as important as ever, but so too nowadays is comfort. Some tailors feel otherwise, but I love the challenge of producing clinically cut yet largely unstructured, light suits.

TS: What differences do you see in men’s style in the US compared to the UK?
Richard James:So far as tailoring is concerned, the US prefers something a touch more classic. That said, we sell through Barney’s and Richard James Online in the States, so you’re not buying anything too different from our UK customers!

TS: What influences/inspires design within the Richard James brand?
Richard James:We’ve always been about producing classic, refined clothing of impeccable quality and pushing the barriers through design, colour and cut. The theme of our current, SS14 collection is Sundown: that cool, colour drenched hour when the spent summer sun slips away from another long day and the dark of night steals in, bringing with it fresh energy and a delicious sense of expectation.

TS: What separates a Richard James suit from the rest?
Richard James:We’re known for the clean, slim lines of our tailoring, but with the bespoke process what separates our suits from others is a bit of you. When we make a bespoke suit, the client is the focal point of the design process. We advise, but the decisions regarding fine detail rest with him. That’s how we ensure he really makes the suit his own.

TS: What’s the difference between ‘bespoke’ and ‘made to measure’?
Richard James:Basically, a bespoke suit is completely hand made – we produce a pattern specifically for the client and piece the suit together in-house by hand. Made-to-measure is more streamlined – a pattern is selected that will fit the client perfectly and the suit is made to the exact specifications it stipulates. Bespoke is the ultimate in tailoring.

TS: Why should a guy invest in a bespoke or made to measure over just buying off the rack and tailoring?
Richard James:Why should a guy drive an Aston Martin Vanquish over a Honda Civic? Bespoke is simply the best there is. And made-to-measure isn’t half bad either.

TS: Navy, black, grey, or other – where should a guy invest their money when buying their summer suit?
Richard James:Here, maybe, is the difference you asked about between men’s style in the UK and US. If I was thinking of a summer suit I’d think ivory, cream, pale blue or the pink Prince of Wales check that we have in our current collection.
