Ah, nothing beats a beach getaway! With the weather in New York rollercoastering between cold and warm, sunny and rain, a trip down South was a necessity last weekend. Friend and fellow blogger, Everett Williams and I partnered with one of Thompson Hotels newest properties - Thompson Playa Del Carmen - just in time to escape another full weekend of thunderstorms and chill in NYC.
At no surprise, as soon as we stepped foot onto the property, there was an instant scramble to attempt to reschedule our flights for a later date and extend our stay! With amenities like a rooftop covered by an infinity pool, multiple bars, lounge beds, a DJ [which by the way had the BEST music blasting all day!], and some of the friendliest staff who welcomed us each day, we knew we were in for a great three days. No need for too many words here. Just a short guide below and plenty of images to convince you to start booking those flights to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico!

TO SLEEP
TO EAT/DRINK
Catch • With some of the freshest fish just feet away, it just made sense for the hotel to open the NYC based restaurant on its' rooftop overlooking the ocean and all of Playa Del Carmen. We were treated like kings and let our host choose most of what we ate. With small plate appetizers, we were able to sample some of the best dishes. Truffle sashimi, grilled octopus, wagyu short rib tacos [my favorite] is what we started with which was just the opening act. For our entree, we all shared a crispy whole "catch" of the day... an entire fish fried and presented before being filleted for us. We of course went for the truffle fries as a side. Dinner isn't complete without dessert which at first we said, "We couldn't possibly!" Turns out... We could once they surprised us with the "Hit Me" chocolate cake. Basically a tower of chocolate cake, brownie, and liquid 'Klondike' bar that melts over the top as soon as you hit it with a spoon. I'm getting hungry again just typing this!
Cinco• The other rooftop restaurant where we spent most of our breakfasts, lunches, and pre-dinner cocktail hours. Just check out the super fresh oysters in the image below for a glimpse of the beach appropriate menu.
Thompson Beach House• Located just about two blocks away on the beach, this small pool oasis has a relaxing vibe with large daybeds and a smaller, private pool. The DJ starts around noon so get a spot early and drink up. We had the Rosemary and Julio cocktail and the Jarrito Mezcal cocktail [both pictured below]... it may have only been ten in the morning but the sun was shining and our cocktail waitress reassured us that we deserved it! We also ordered the avocado toast [of course] which may have been the best I've ever [yes, EVER] had.
TO SHOP
Just walk down to the ground level for a wide range of shops. Everything from a H&M to a Calvin Klein store is offered on the first level of the Thompson complex. If you're looking for some authentic gifts, souvenirs, and handmade crafts, just walk up and down the main strip which is located right in front of the hotel.
