And they’re off! It’s that time of year again when it is more than ok to be drinking whiskey before noon and of course to dress to impress. This year let’s switch it up a bit… In an attempt to not look like we are all about to go on some bogus Easter egg hunt; I’ve decided the Kentucky Derby festivities calls for a much needed upgrade. Let’s lose your standard [news flash: “basic” has now been replaced with “standard.” Spread the word!] head-to-toe pastels and seer suckers and go for something a little outside the box but still Derby appropriate. First off, let’s lose the sleeves and replace them with a more modern, spring appropriate short sleeve that is obviously more comfortable than those oxfords. I mean come on, it’s Saturday and I’m drinking whiskey… nothing good could come of sleeves! Don’t worry though fellas, you can still wear your bold prints and colors to get the K Derby look. I couldn’t take that away from the one day bros can wear floral prints without being judged.
As for covering our rears, J. Crew is the obvious shop of choice for this day. These 7” Stanton shorts are the perfect length and colors for the preppy, southern look. I have them in few colors and are my no brainer go-tos while trekking through the city during spring and summer. There really is no need for your shorts to be hanging past your knees… step it up and cut down the length on those shorts for a much cleaner, tailored look!
For those tricky, but much needed bow ties… follow these easy steps to learn just how easy it is to get one on. Every guy should learn the correct bow tie technique. Trust me, people will be impressed by this skill! It takes a little time and effort to learn how to correctly tie one but once you have it down you’re good for life… It won’t be changing any time soon.
Boat Shoes w/ Anchors | Sneakers w/ Palm Print | Fish n Chips by Base London [sold on ASOS] |Rivieras
As for the kicks… think boat shoes and canvas. You can find some really affordable shoes these days but ASOSis my shoe of choice for some bad ass, ultra affordable options. Go big and throw on a cool pattern or bright color shoe to complete the K Derby look.
Now you’re set to bet big and drink lots on this always dapper occasion. Just don’t forget that Sunday is Cinco de Mayo… no need to do the walk of shame home the next morning. The Derby look easily transitions into the next tequila filled day. Least that’s the excuse I’ll be telling my friends when I show up for the next day of festivities in the same outfit! Good luck!!
