Don't ask me what that sign says above... I have no idea! We somehow found the energy to pry ourselves away from the beach in Totaranui to take a quick day-trip over the hill in Golden Bay to Te Waikoropupū Springs [Pupū Springs for short] - the largest freshwater springs in New Zealand and the largest cold water springs in the Southern Hemisphere.
Protected from all forms of human contact, Pupū Springs are some of the most beautiful waters I have ever seen - contrary to the name. You can see all kinds of wildlife and natural plant filters straight through to the very bottom of the springs. A quick twenty minute walk takes you along a path guiding you through from the beginning of the fresh water pond through the rapids and different streams that make up the waters. It was definitely worth the trek away from the beach and a must see when visiting the South Island of New Zealand!
